A1 vs Berwick 9-2 Win
The winter Rustlers played host to a hot Berwick outfit who defeated top placed Dandenong last week 1/0 on the back of a Blake Cunningham gem. We faced Berwick’s other top hurler Barnett and it didn’t seem to faze us one bit. Looking quite comfortable in the box we were able to find gaps and pick walks and tac on 4 runs against a quality arm.
Max was again superb with his intensity on the hill and really set the tone, something that I know the boys in the field feed off. He spun 6 innings of 2 run ball before handing over to Brandon Stenhouse to blow a few cobwebs out after a year off the bump.
Well there wasn’t many cobwebs to be seen as he mowed down opposing hitters for the next 2 digs with a fastball many would struggle with in this league. The team and coaching staff and in fact the club are glad to see you healthy again.
Another mention goes to Josh Ashen starting his first game in the ones and not looking out of place at all, 3 walks was another bonus for the team and himself showing great concentration.
Fierenzi, Luke Ashen, Enciondo, Stenhouse, Turley are heating up at the dish at the right time and with a chance at still making finals I hope we all continue to be aggressive at the dish.
Well done to Stenny also hitting the teams first dinger this season.
A2 vs Berwick 7-2 Win
The Magoos got back on the winners list this week with a convincing win over Berwick.
In a largely pitcher dominated contest the good guys finished strongly once we were allowed a taste at the opposition relivers.
Starters Jack Ogilvie and resident Benedict Arnold Chris Neilson, shut down both offences through the first 4 innings before Berwick drew first blood in the 5th with a sac bunt and a ground out.
Chelt hit back right away after Matt McKenna walked, stole a base (we pinch ran for him, don’t get too excited) and was driven in by an Alex Marshall RBI ground out.
The 6th inning saw Berwick roll out a reliver Chelt immediately took a liking to, drawing 4 walks and then an Alex Marshall RBI single to notch a 4 spot and take charge.
Berwick tacked on another run in the 7th after Jack Ogilvie forgot how many outs there were and turned his nose up at a potential double play through the plate and took only the out at 1st, allowing a run to score.
Then Tom Ogilvie ripped a 2 RBI double in the bottom of the inning to ice the contest.
So, between the two red-headed Ogre’s we have one exceptional player here.
C1 vs Bonbeach 3-3 Draw
C2 vs Bonbeach 6-8 Loss
Under 12 vs Bonbeach 4-5 Loss
Under 16 vs Berwick 6-1 Draw
Under 18 vs Dandenong 3-14 Loss
This week the U18’s traveled to Dandenong to take on the ladder leaders. Defensively we struggled with our pitching causing us to go deep into the bull pen. Shelby Roberts started but tired quickly as he struggled to find the zone.
Tom O followed and also found the going tough. U16 Flynn Healy took to the mound and did a great job for his first time over the extra distance. Closing duties were handled by first timer on the mound Lucas C, who after a quick 101 lesson on pitching pounded the strike zone. Catching duties were handled by Luke Ashen who as we all know brings a spark to the game. He had a great day throwing out 4 base runners.
Offensively we were a bit disappointing with only 3 hits for the day, Shelby with two and Mike Hill with one. To win games we need to work the count a bit better and swing at our pitch. The loss still leaves us in the four.
