It is with deep sorrow that we share the heartbreaking news of Bev’s passing. After a long and courageous fight with liver disease, her health took a sudden and devastating turn. Despite her resilience and strength, she was unable to receive the liver transplant she so urgently needed. Surrounded by love, she quietly slipped
away, her immense spirit leaving behind a legacy that touched countless lives.
Bev’s involvement with the Cheltenham Baseball Club spans an incredible 34 years, marked by unwavering passion and dedication. Her journey began when her son
Adam joined Tee Ball during a winter season, quickly falling in love with the game—and Bev was right there with him, learning as he played.
That following summer, Adam joined The Sloggers, and Bev’s involvement deepened. At the time, she was teaching at Heatherton Primary School, where she seized the opportunity to form a school team. This group eventually entered the club competition as The Heatherton Heat. Under her guidance, they thrived—culminating in a State Schools Final appearance at Altona as a curtain-raiser to the ABL, where they claimed victory.
Bev’s love for the game grew stronger each season. She took on the role of Junior Coordinator in winter and, as the boys advanced beyond Tee Ball, she taught herself
the art of scoring. From junior games to top-tier Winter A Grade and Summer Division 1 matches, Bev became a constant at the scorers’ bench.
When Travis played in the U16 VSBL National Championships in Canberra under coaches Rob Bechaz and Lance, Bev—though not officially part of the squad—was ever-present, managing uniforms and meticulously tracking pitch counts to support the team.
In the 1990s, when the Club fielded two women’s teams, Bev made sure she didn’t miss the action. She played with gusto and was awarded the batting trophy in the
1994/95 season with an impressive average of .438. Her playing days ended after a head-first slide into third base resulted in a dislocated shoulder—but not her
connection to the game.
Roughly a decade ago, when the Club relaunched its women’s competition, Bev returned to the diamond once again—as a scorer and mentor, sharing her knowledge
with others.
As Adam transitioned to Forest Hills for winter baseball, Bev filled in for the Firsts when needed, and in recent years, she has been a dedicated scorer for the Slugs at
the Ballarat Masters.
Her passion for baseball knows no bounds. Come MLB season, you’ll often find her with a book in hand, a game on screen, and even recordings queued for later
viewing. The game had become not just a pastime but a defining thread in the fabric of her life.
Bev was involved in the Club for over 30 years and highly valued as a person and for her contributions as a player, administrator and scorer. As a mother, no-one could
have provided more support for her sons Travis and Adam throughout their very successful baseball careers.
The Club sends its deepest condolences to Lance and his Family. Bev will be sadly missed.
The funeral service will be held for Bev on Friday, 27th June 2025 at 2:00pm.
